Keywords is the sauce in you content, search engines will crawl your site to determine what your content is about, if you have been using the right SEO tactics then you have your keywords strategically placed within your content to maximize your chances of making it to page one for that keyword.
In this post I’m going to show you how you can make more money from your site and how to find the best keywords for your website.
The power of keywords
People that are searching for information on the internet they use words to look for a service, a product or information on a subject that means something to them.
To find the best keywords for your website your need to try and understand better how and why people use a particular keyword when they are searching.
Here are some questions that you could be asking yourself:
- What does the search term mean?
- What exactly are they searching for?
- What specifically are they looking for?
- What kind of information are they looking for?
- How many people are using that search term?
Keyword strategy
On this page you will find a keyword strategy and the tools to help you uncover the vital information that you need to build strong, informative, engaging content around your well researched keywords.
Ask yourself questions before keyword research
You need your online business so that you can make more money through selling products or through commissions earned from affiliate links, in order to do that you will be using keywords and SEO to better understand who your target market is and what they are interested in.
Why do the best marketers spend so much time on keyword research? Because keywords are where the money is, so take the time and don’t bypass this crucial step when planning on how to make your site more SEO friendly.
It’s important to understand the difference between what you want and what your target market wants, focus on your audience by using data driven keyword research that will influence how you write and position those golden nugget keywords.
Here is an example:
Let’s say that your site is primarily based around gardening, you want to find more keywords that will resonate with your website visitors and gain traction with the search engines.
Get a pen and paper and write down what you think people would type into the search bar about gardening, e.g.
- How can I make my garden beautiful?
- What is the best time of the year to sow flowers?
- How long does it take for newly sown grass to grow?
- How much fertilizer do I need to use?
- Where can I buy garden benches online?
- Where can I get advice on geraniums?
- Who is a gardening expert?
- How are begonias grown?
- Where can I get topsoil locally?
You get the idea? by writing down words that you think people will use to help them find the information that they are looking for will help you to create content that fulfils the needs of your target audience, at the same time it will help to rank your site as an authority on that subject.
What search terms is your audience using?
Everybody has their own way of asking google for information in the sense that they will type in as little or as much information as they see fit to find what they are looking for, so what you would type in to the search engine may not be the same as what someone else would type in.
It’s important to understand that there are literally millions of keywords that people use to try and find what they are looking for, so you need to be able to find answers to their questions.
Keywords in mind
Ok so you have some keywords in mind that you would like to write content around to gain rankings, those keywords are probably related to topics on your site whether it be a product or service, these are what we call SEED KEYWORDS and this is where we will start !
Keyword tool
I recommend this great KEYWORD RESEARCH TOOL, go ahead and enter those keywords to find the monthly search volume, the number of competing websites and other similar keywords, in this way you will find variations on your original keyword that may be a better keyword, or a common question about your niche that otherwise you might have missed.
Here is an example type “gardening” into the KEYWORD RESEARCH TOOL I just did that and here is a list of the results:
These KEYWORD RESEARCH TOOL results show us some interesting data that can be used to build content around:
At the top you can see some abbreviations
Keyword
This is the seed keyword that I used
Traffic
This is the estimated monthly traffic for that keyword
QSR
QSR is the number of competing websites
SEO
SEO or search engine optimization score is the difficulty of making it to page one
KQI
KQI is an indication of how good the keyword quality is GREEN is great.
SEO
SEO is a traffic and competition score the higher the better
Domains
Domains is what names of domains are available for that keyword.
Related
Related is interesting because it shows related keywords that you may never think of.
Brainstorm
Brainstorm is another list of keywords that can stir your imagination!
What should you look for in this keyword list?
Search volume and low competition are the two most important elements to this keyword research, however the higher the search volume the more work you will have to put in to make it onto page one because higher search volume means higher competition.
This may not always be the case but in general it does mean more content creation to achieve higher results.
For example if you were to write a general article with “Gardening” as the keyword you won’t make the first page because as you can see the monthly search results are 39,747 the QSR is 241 and the SEO is only 65, remember high search results with low competition so what would be a good keyword to work with from the list?
Gardening services Melbourne looks like a good prospect, the results show QSR 56, estimated monthly visitors if you were to achieve page one is 10, 79 competing sites and a high SEO score of 95, looks promising doesn’t it, even though the amount of monthly visitors is only 10 it’s still a good keyword to run with.
In this example it can be an advantage in terms of the search results to write content around a long tail keyword like ” gardening services Melbourne” because you stand a much better chance of a high rank than if you simply wrote an article using the seed keyword gardening.
What is a long tail keyword?
Wouldn’t it be fantastic to rank for the GARDENING keyword, look at the figures nearly 40,000 monthly searches, however this is only a fraction of the keywords that are gardening related, remember there are millions of other search terms related to the gardening niche or any other niche.
Go for the long tail keywords that is keyword that consist of 3-5 words related to your niche, so what keyword tool do I use?
