Many people have a dream of being able to make money on the internet working from home to increase their income in addition to their “real job” in the offline world.
The internet has changed the way we live people are spending more and more time online whether it is to check out the news, weather, your social media account, your online banking or to search for a product or service.
For people who want to make money online at a minimum you will need a website, in this article I’m going to show you how to make a money website, how to find your niche, how to use a keyword tool. On this page I’m going to help you to understand how to use the best SEO practices to get your site to the top of the rankings so that you have a money making website.
How to start your own website
In the modern world starting your own website is simple enough, you don’t need any technical skills to make a money website but you do need to do some training, your website will be your business focal point.
I recommend that you do the online Entrepreneur certification course, the course is free to try and teaches you everything that you need to know on setting up a website to make money from.
You will learn how to find a niche that you are comfortable with, how to create content that brings people to your site and how to use affiliate links to sell products and make money.
Part of a community
The online world can be a lonely place, it’s not the same as a nine to five job, once you start to learn how to make a money website you can become a premium member during your online Entrepreneur certification course and join an online community where you can make new friends with like-minded people.
I can’t stress how important it is to be able to chat with other people from across the globe especially if you have a question about some aspect of starting your own online business.
I belong to an online community of people from all over the world that are willing and able to help their fellow members to become successful at their money websites. Why not take a look around to see what is happening in the online business world?
It starts with a niche.
To make money from your own website you are going to have to come up with some ideas but don’t worry this keyword tool will help you to find which niche market would be the most profitable for you.
Get a pen and paper, take your time and write down some money making ideas, think about products or services that could be sold online, think about your hobby, think about your job, could there be money to be made there? here are some examples to get you started;
• Football
• Cars
• Gardening
• Relationships
• Losing weight
• Elderly care
• Horoscopes
• Weightlifting
• Basketball
• Clothing
• Kitchens
• Attic conversions
• Fishing
• Shooting
• Sailing
I could go on and on but you get the idea, these are all subjects that people are interested in there is usually a product or service that matches each of these niches, all you have to do is to use this keyword tool and type in the seed name and see what results you get.
Here is an example if I use this keyword tool and type in the seed name “basketball” these are the keywords that come up
Basketball has 320,821 searches per month but the competition is 199 websites that you would have to best to get a page with “basketball” as the main keyword. Let’s look a little closer at the search results and you can see that “shooting techniques basketball” has only 80 searches a month and 38 competing websites, the SEO score is 96.
This keyword is a good one for you to use even though the monthly searches are low, there are fewer competing sites and the SEO score if 96 means that you stand a good chance of making it to the number one spot on Google.
Hopefully this will give you an idea of how to go about finding a niche that you would enjoy writing about the more keywords that you find the more pages you can write. The more pages the more website visitors, the more visitors the better chance you have of making money by selling a product or just by adding affiliate links to your content.
How to choose a niche
To discover if your niche is a popular and profitable use this keyword tool and combine the results with your results on Google trends.
When using Google trends, you can change the search area to worldwide if you are planning on making your site a worldwide site rather than a local site.
Chose a niche that isn’t too narrow and has a broad appeal, check the availability of long tail keywords for your niche you don’t want to be struggling in 6 months’ time for keywords. Chose a niche that you know something about or better still a niche that you are passionate about.
Passion drives you
Trust me on this passion drives you, ask any of the top business people in the world what drove them to be successful and nine out of ten will say they were passionate about their business.
Build your money website
Even if you have no experience or technical skills you can build your money website from the ground up by using a free WordPress theme, WordPress themes are popular because it is so easy to use them to build your money website.
If you want a quick lesson in how to use WordPress to set up your website my friend Kyle has a good training on how to do this.
Within the WordPress platform you have the opportunity to choose from thousands of themes, take your time pick a few different themes, experiment with them, change the colour scheme and fonts if you don’t like what is there.
When you have decided on a theme take out your mobile phone and check if the theme that you have chosen looks perfect on your phone, you also need to check the speed of the theme, in other words how fast does your site load.
Google places great importance on website speed load times because the faster it loads the greater the site user experience.
Writing content
Hopefully at this stage you have a better understanding of how to find a niche, how to find keywords for that niche and how to set up your website, the next step in the process is the business of writing content that the search engines will rank.
Everybody has their own unique way of writing; my advice is to use a writing template for convenience and all of your pages will be the same layout.
Start with your chosen keyword, it will be in the url so you place that at the top, your first headline should be the keyword set in the H1 style. Please see image example
When you are writing content it’s important to remember these essential steps:
1. Use a writing template.
2. Put your chosen keyword in the url (at the top) section, also put your keyword as the H1 at the top of your first paragraph see my example (“how to find the best keywords for your website”) above, finally make your keyword fit naturally into your content.
3.Remember not to put your keyword in too many places throughout your content, most industry experts recommend keyword density of between 1 and 3 percent.
So, for a page or post of say 2,000 words on the maximum side you should have no more than 6 times, any figure above the 3% maximum could be considered spamming by the search engines.
Spamming keywords is frowned upon by the search engines and will most definitely hurt your rankings, so stick to the rules.
4. Use images to break up line after line of text, images keep people on your site for longer increasing your chances of them clicking on an affiliate link or buying a product meaning you make money.
Search engine optimization
Search engine optimization is the secret to making money from your website, basically you must learn the skill of optimizing your website to the maximum so that when the search engines crawl your site, they can easily determine what your site is trying to communicate.
In a nutshell SEO or search engine optimization is the skill of making every single bit of content that you write, videos that you post or images that you insert are 100% optimized to take advantage of the search engines rankings.
Remember the higher your website rankings the greater your exposure to your target audience the greater the potential to make money from your site.
So how do you SEO your website?
As marketers we want to write quality engaging and interesting content for your target market, however our content will never get in front of those eyes unless we can convince the search engines that our content is worthy of their attention.
Website ranking factors
There are a number of ranking factors that make a website a great website, here is my top 10 list of website ranking factors:
1. Accessible and secure site
2. Excellent page speed especially on mobile
3. A mobile friendly site
4. Age of your site, url and site authority
5. Fully optimized website
6. Technical SEO
7. User experience rank
8. Outside links to reputable sites
9. Good social media following
10. Full business information
Accessible and secure site
When you are designing your website it’s important to make it accessible for everybody including disabled people, you implement your site information through multi-sensory channels, for example sight and sound.
Disabled people should be able to use voice based and keyboard-based navigation to access all of your site information just like everybody else.
All of the major search engines look to see if your site uses SSL or secure socket technology, your url would have the prefix “https” meaning that there is a standard encrypted connection between the web server and the individual’s browser.
The reason for SSL technology is to make all data that is submitted from the website user is completely safe and cannot be intercepted by a third party.
Excellent page speed
Google will rank your website higher if it loads fast, if you go onto Google page speed insights and your site loads at 100% it makes ranking easier, however if it doesn’t here are some tips to help you.
Use a WordPress image optimizer plug in, one of the reasons why a site loads slowly could be that the images are too big.
Believe it or not page weight affects load speeds, Google recommends that best practice is a page weight under 500kb.
Page size and weight can be measured by page weight bytes. Simply put, page weight bytes show the total size of a web page measured in bytes.
According to Google its best recommendation is to have your page weight under 500 kb.
Each time a new visitor comes to your site and unless you use a browser caching plug in found in WordPress your visitor won’t be able to see the latest changes to your site.
Minify your html, this means that a simple plug in in WordPress called html modify will compress the space that the html computer language takes up making your site load faster.
Use amp for WordPress, it means accelerated mobile pages and will help a lot to make your site faster.
Mobile friendly site
Remember when choosing a website theme try a number of them, make sure that everything on the site works and looks well on a mobile phone.
Age of your site, url and authority.
The longer your site is up on the internet, your url and authority is starting to build based on a few factors like site usage, demographics, website comments, number of inbound links, number of outbound links to other authority websites.
Fully optimized site.
By using the best SEO strategies means that your site is fully optimized for the search engines, your rankings will improve.
Technical SEO
I know that many website owners just don’t have technical skills, however you can access this free training on technical SEO that will help with your understanding.
User experience rank
Again the user experience comes into the equation for search engine rankings, you need to be careful on how your site is laid out, it’s very helpful to get someone else to look at your site in a critical way in case you missed something.
Outside links to reputable sites
By creating links within your site content to other reputable sites within your niche shows more authority from you over time sites that like your content will link back to your site, because of this the search engines will reward you with a higher ranking.
Good social media following
To promote your site you should use the power of social media, I’m sure you are aware that social media is a platform that you can use to build up an audience for your brand that can influence others to visit your website when they share and like your posts.
More than 3.8 billion people use social media, to get the most out of this modern-day phenomenon you need to open up business accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn, my friend Jay has written a fantastic post here about how to plan your social media strategy.
Pinterest has been a way to get your message across using great visuals with a simple messsage that makes people want to click on your website link, check out my guide on how to use Pinterest to drive traffic.
Full business information
Google and the other search engines want to see that you have all of your business information listed on your site and easy to find, it gives more credibility that you are a genuine online business owner.
Choosing affiliate programs
Some people say that you pick a product to sell and the build a website, I’m of the opposite opinion I believe that you should follow the tried and tested method of first finding a profitable niche, get a memorable domain name
Choose a fast loading wordpress theme, write non plagiarized unique content, SEO that content get backlinks to your site, use social media to build your audience, then you can choose any number of affiliate products or create your own products to sell.
Conclusion
When you start on how to make a money website it’s essential to take the time to do your niche research before you dive into the online training, pick your niche carefully, experiment with WordPress themes until you find one that you are happy with, use the keyword tool and Google insights.
When you are writing content, make it easy to read, keep your sentences to no more than four lines, use the H1 and H2 to make your content stand out, place your keyword in about 3% of your content in a natural way, use the same size images, make sure your site is fast loading and last but not least promote your site through social media.
